Dear [team/member],
The 5th Annual National CROWN Day on July 3 is a memorable holiday commemorating the signing of the first CROWN Act while mobilizing the nation to end race-based hair discrimination. The CROWN Act, which stands for “Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair,” is a law that prohibits race-based hair discrimination based on hair texture and protective hairstyles, including braids, locs, twists and knots, in the workplace and in K-12 public and charter schools.
In 2019, Dove and the CROWN Coalition partnered with State Senator Holly J. Mitchell of California (District 30) to introduce legislation addressing the disparate impact of race-based hair discrimination on Black people in workplaces and schools. California Senate Bill 188 (SB 188) was introduced in January 2019 and signed into law on July 3, 2019, making California the first state to prohibit discrimination based on protective hairstyles and hair texture, including locs, braids, Bantu knots, and twists.
The inaugural CROWN Act spurred a nationwide movement to normalize Black hair, and to date, twenty-six (26) states have legal protections against race-based hair discrimination.
The groundbreaking movement and National CROWN Day are created and led by The CROWN Coalition, a national alliance founded by Dove, National Urban League, Western Center on Law & Poverty, Color Of Change, a team of Black women, and supported by over 100 community and advocacy organizations.
In honor of this year’s fifth National CROWN Day, Dove and the CROWN Coalition invite you to join the celebration by showing love for your CROWN on social media. Here’s how you can be a part of the celebration:
